JS 3

Ibanez JS3 Story

The Ibanez JS3 was released in 1990. Like the JS4 and JS5 painted by Joe’s sisters, Joan Satriani and Carol Satriani, the JS3 was basically a JS1 with a special custom graphic Donnie designed by the artist Donnie Hunt from the Bay Area of San Francisco. The only difference with the JS1 is the graphic finish. The body was still made of American basswood, featuring a 22 fret maple JS neck with 6105 frets inlaid with pearly dots. This neck was further refined in 1991 and 1992 and a Lo Pro Edge was installed since 1992 instead of the Edge tremolo. The words “JS Series” appeared since 1992 on the headstock.

The JS3s are now collection guitars due to their rarity, every Donnie is an unique piece of art.

I have three original Donnie Hunt guitars. Donnie was an artist in the Bay Area who passed away a couple of years ago. He taught art at the Oakland School of Arts and Crafts, and basically painted everything in his environment – his loft, his phone, refrigerator, shoes, jackets, whatever. I had him paint a couple of guitars, then took him to Ibanez, and they basically hired him. I think he painted 300 versions, all incredibly different. Donnie also did a lot of embarrassing clothing from my early career! It was thrift-store stuff – very difficult to clean on the road! I originally had four of them, but my favorite one was stolen.
