Veenue : Veenue.com is the first experiment of video collaboration for musicians. Do you think this can be a revolution in how the people experience music today?
Joe : « It’s great that finally the technology had arrived where we can leave actual audio. I remember maybe ten years back (or more, in the 90′s), there were attempts to have musicians jamming around the world via the internet, but that was on Midi and the sound was terrible. That really wasn’t signature of the individuals personality.
So now with the website people can leave their actual sound which I think is really the fingerprint of the personality that you are leaving online. I think that can raise abroad a message even on what you are playing to the perspective collaborators somewhere out there in the world. So, I’m curious to see what develops. »
Veenue : If you could use Veenue to build your virtual band with far living musicians, which ones would you choose?
Joe : « That’s a kind of a loaded question because I know a lot of musicians out there who aren’t even online. You know, they’re just affraids of the internet, like Sammy, he doesn’t even do email… good luck finding him online! I have to send to his wife emails with the songs. I would probably start with a lot of my friends not well known (the people don’t know who they are).
It’s a great way to collaborate with other engineers and producers as well and not necessarily players, they don’t have to be players. If I was gonna collaborate with other good friends like Steve Vai, we’d probably do it secretly, so…
I think the charme is not knowing you’re going to be collaborating with, that’s what I like about it. It’s an even playing field, so I can lay something down and then could be a 14 years old bass player from Mumbai and he can come up with some great line that I never thought of, and someone like here plug, lay their part. I think that is going to be the most exciting part about it, the fact everyone is on an equal footing as a contributor. »
Veenue : Joe, can you tell us about the everyday life with the musicians of the Chickenfoot: Chad Smith, Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony?
Joe : « That’s kind of difficult, everyday life for each of the four members is so incredibly different. You can just take a guess of what kind of life Sammy Hagar is leading, I mean he’s a crazy lead singer but he’s a family man. He’s got about a million businesses that he’s running and he takes time to hang out with me and write songs and, you know, he likes to party and have a good time so, you know, you can use your immagination! My life is a little bit more straight forward, I’m totally devoted to writing music and playing and practicing, so I’ve got a wired companies making different products that I have to look over. So it’s a little bit easier, I think, to imagine what I’m doing. I have no idea what Michael Antony does during his time but I imagine that he’s always on vacation, I think he’s, since he finish with Van Halen he decided to devote his life to being on vacation which is great, so i do believe he’s figured out the secret of life. And then of course, Chad! Chad is a bit more Sammy, really crazy individual, and he wakes up far too early in the morning for me to know what he’s doing. All I know is that when he sits behind the drum kit he is a powerhouse. »
Veenue : Joe, did you expect so many sold-out dates and such a positive feedback from the european fans?
Joe : « I knew we would have great shows because the reviews of the album were so positive, coming up from every country, so I was very excited to get here. So we can finally play for the fans. »
